Materials for Half Square Triangle Baby Quilt Pattern
- 4 coordinating quilting cotton fabrics
- Rotary cutter and cutting mat
- Quilting ruler
- Sewing machine
- Coordinating thread
- Iron and ironing board
- Quilter’s pins or clips

- Cut 2 squares measuring 5″ x 5″ from each of the four fabrics
- Total: 8 squares per block

For the Finished Quilt
- 36″ x 48″ piece of quilt batting
- Quilt backing fabric (approximately 42″ x 54″)
- Binding fabric (about ¼ yard or approximately 160 inches of 2½” wide binding strips)
Cut the Squares for your quilt block
Using your rotary cutter and ruler, cut:
- 2 squares measuring 5″ x 5″ from Fabric A
- 2 squares measuring 5″ x 5″ from Fabric B
- 2 squares measuring 5″ x 5″ from Fabric C
- 2 squares measuring 5″ x 5″ from Fabric D
You should have 8 squares total for each quilt block.
If you are making the entire quilt you need to cut more squares. You need 24 squares for each fabric for a baby quilt
Cut the Triangles
Cut each square diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner.
This creates two triangles from every square.
After cutting all eight squares, you’ll have 16 triangles ready to sew.
Sew the Half Square Triangle Units
Pair two triangles together to create a square.
Using a ¼-inch seam allowance, sew the long diagonal edge of each pair.
Continue sewing until all of your triangle pairs have been stitched.
Press the Seams
Press each seam open or press toward the darker fabric—whichever method you prefer.

Lay all of your finished half square triangle units out on a flat surface.

Sew the Rows
Once you’re happy with the arrangement:
- Sew each row together using a ¼-inch seam allowance.
- Press the seams.
- Sew the three rows together to complete your 12″ x 12″ quilt block.
Repeat these steps until you’ve made 12 quilt blocks.

Arrange your quilt blocks:
- 3 blocks across
- 4 blocks down
