Triangle Baby Quilt Pattern
If youโre looking for a simple quilt that looks more complicated than it actually is, this Triangle baby quilt pattern is a great project to try. The block is made with basic squares and triangles, making it a good choice for a beginner quilter who wants to practice accurate cutting, sewing, and pressing. The finished design has a beautiful geometric look, with a large center square surrounded by triangles and framed with four corner squares.
This baby quilt uses four coordinating fabrics, so itโs also a fun way to play with color and fabric placement. You can use a combination of solids, plaids, florals, or novelty fabrics depending on the look you want. A magnetic seam guide can be especially helpful for keeping your ยผ-inch seams consistent as you sew the blocks together.
Each unfinished quilt block measures 8ยฝ x 8ยฝ inches. The baby quilt shown here uses 30 blocks arranged 5 blocks across and 6 blocks down, creating a finished quilt top measuring approximately 42ยฝ x 51 inches. Itโs a practical size for a baby quilt and can easily be customized by adding more or fewer blocks.

Making the Triangle Baby Quilt Pattern

For the baby quilt shown in this pattern, you will need:

Before sewing, lay all of your blocks out and check the orientation of the blocks and fabric patterns. This is especially important if you are using directional fabrics.
Step 1: Sew the Rows
Starting with the first row, place two blocks right sides together.
Sew along the adjoining edge using a ยผ-inch seam allowance.
Press the seam.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size is the finished baby quilt?
The quilt top measures approximately 42ยฝ x 51 inches when made with 30 blocks arranged 5 across by 6 down.
How big is each quilt block?
Each block is 8ยฝ x 8ยฝ inches unfinished.
How many blocks do I need for the baby quilt?
You need 30 blocks for the quilt shown in this pattern.
Is this a good quilt pattern for beginners?
Yes. The block uses basic squares and triangles and does not require complicated piecing techniques. Accurate cutting and maintaining a consistent ยผ-inch seam allowance will help your blocks fit together properly.
Do I need a magnetic seam guide?
No, it is optional. However, a magnetic seam guide can be helpful for beginners because it provides a physical guide for maintaining a consistent ยผ-inch seam allowance.
Can I make this quilt with different fabrics?
Absolutely. The design would work well with solids, florals, children’s prints, seasonal fabrics, or scraps. Just choose fabrics with enough contrast so the triangles and center square remain visible.
Can I make the quilt larger?
Yes. Simply make additional blocks and arrange them into additional rows and columns. Keep in mind that changing the number of blocks will change the amount of fabric, batting, and backing you need.
Can I use directional fabric for the center?
Yes, but pay attention to the orientation when cutting and assembling Fabric D. Directional prints can be especially fun in the center square, but youโll want the design facing the correct direction.
What seam allowance should I use?
Use a ยผ-inch seam allowance throughout the quilt piecing and when attaching the binding.
