Featuring bold geometric lines and a playful zig-zag design, this quilt creates a striking look while using simple piecing techniques that are perfect for quilters of all skill levels.
The finished quilt measures approximately 45″ x 60″, making it an ideal size for a crib quilt, stroller quilt, tummy time mat, or nursery wall hanging. The repeating zig-zag pattern adds movement and visual interest, while the green, yellow, and white color palette creates a fresh and cheerful look for a baby boy’s nursery. Of course, you can easily customize the colors to match any nursery theme or baby shower gift.
One of the best things about this quilt pattern is how quickly it comes together. The design is built from easy half-square triangles that are arranged to create larger zig-zag blocks. Even if you’re relatively new to quilting, you’ll find the construction straightforward and enjoyable. The larger blocks also help the quilt top come together faster than many traditional baby quilt patterns.
Handmade quilts make wonderful gifts for new babies and growing families. Whether you’re sewing for your own little one, a grandchild, or a friend expecting a baby, this quilt is sure to become a treasured keepsake for years to come.

Create your Quilt Blocks

First thing you need to do is create your quilt blocks. I have an entire free tutorial on how above at the blue button.
Assemble Your Zig Zag Baby Quilt Pattern

After you have your larger quilt blocks finished, you will simply want to piece your quilt together. Here’s where it can get tricky. Fabric can shift or your seams can be a little uneven.
You want to take your larger quilt blocks and piece them into rows. I typically do 5 across sewing my row together.
I sew 6 rows and then press my seams towards the darker fabric. You want your seams to lay flat.
Sew Your Rows Together
Once you have all your rows sewn, You want to start sewing your rows together. The biggest issue will be matching your pieces so that your zig zag pieces match up.
This can take some time so be patient with yourself and make sure your seams are lined up. Use clips or pins to hold everything in place.
Sew each row. and iron your seams down.
Trim Up Your Zig Zag Baby Quilt
For a true 45×60″ baby quilt, you will need to trim up your quilt before adding batting. You can either trim it up on 1 side only or for a unified look trim both sides of your zig zag baby quilt pattern.
Add Your Batting
I typically use an adhesive spray to the quilt top and then add my batting. This keeps it from slipping while you are quilting. Make sure you have a well ventilated area. I usually open windows or if the weather is great I will take a folding table outside and do it outside.
Add Your Quilt Back
Attach your quilt back which should be a little bigger than your quilt. We have a free quilt backing calculator to help you. Use Safety pins to attach all your layers.
Finish your Baby Quilt
Either sew diagonal lines using your sewing machine or use a long arm machine to finish your quilt. You will then want to trim up your quilt and add your quilt binding. We have a free quilt binding calculator
