Lined Tote Bag Pattern

This lined tote bag pattern came after my favorite tote bag started raveling and coming apart. I found some beautiful canvas fabric and deconstructed my previous bag and added a lining for more support and to keep things clean.

Cut Your Fabric

For the main piece, cut 1 piece on the fold  24″ wide x 15″ high. For your lining you need to cut a piece of fabric the same exact size above.

For the bottom part you want to cut a piece of fabric that is 24″ wide and 7.5″ tall.

Finally, for your handle, you need 2 pieces of fabrics that are 51″ x 4″

Cut your boxed corners

Boxed corners will help your bag lay flat and helps you be able to use all of the inside of the bag. With right sides together you will cut a boxed corner that is 2.5″ wide and 2″ tall. Do this on both corners of your main fabric and bottom fabric.

Iron the long edges of your bottom fabric about 1/4″.

Create Your Handles

You want your handles to be super strong and this is how we do that with any tote bag. You will iron your handle piece in half. Next you will iron each edge to the middle of your handle. After doing that on both sides, you will fold it in half and iron again. You handle should have 4 layers.

Next, you will sew down the open edge making sure to back stitch at the top and bottom on both handles. Set your handles aside so we can start assembly.

Pinning Your Handles in Place

Using a fabric marker you want to measure on both sides 5.5 ” to 6.5″ and mark each spot. With a bigger tote bag like this, we went from the bottom of the bag to the top of the bag and put marks all the way up leaving a 2″ space at the top. This will ensure your straps are straight.

Place your straps on the markings and pin. You will sew across the bottom and up both sides. Make sure to leave about a 2″ space at the top and sew across the handle for added support. Finish by sewing the final edge. Do this on both sides

Adding Bottom Piece

Place your outside fabric right sides up and then place your bottom fabric lined up at the bottom of your main fabric. All your fabric should be right sides up.

Next you are going to sew all the way around your bottom piece using the edge of your walking foot as your guide. I did backstitch across the handle straps for added support.

Add Your Lining

With right sides together pin your lining and sew down your edges (do not sew your boxed seams). We did pin the handles to the outer fabric in the middle (seen in the printable pattern) to make sure they didn’t move.

When you finish you will match up your boxed seams with right sides still together. Iron open your seams.

Sew your edges but not your boxed seams. Make sure and leave a 2-3 ” opening to be able to pull through your fabric. You will close it up later. It’s easier to have more of an opening than a small opening.

Next you will bring your boxed seam together and sew a 1/2 ” seam allowance and trim the edges. Be careful not to cut your seams.

Finishing Your Lined Tote bag

You are so close to being finished. Place your hand inside your opening and pull all your material out. You should be seeing the right sides of your fabric.

Now, take and put your lining inside and iron around the top. To finish it off, topstich the top.

We also have a taller tote bag that has pockets inside.
