When You Need Sewing Machine Repair

Tangled Threads and Bobbin Jams:

We have all dealt with tangled threads and bobbin jams, but if you have followed our suggestions on what to do when your computerized sewing machine or quilting machines are skipping stitches or jamming, then it’s time to take it to the repair technicians.

Remember the rule: tangled thread and bobbin jams can occur when the upper and lower threads fail to properly interlock during stitching, resulting in uneven or interrupted stitching patterns.

Tangled threads and bobbin jams are often caused by incorrect threading, improperly wound bobbins, or a misaligned bobbin case. To resolve this issue, carefully rethread your machine, check the bobbin tension, and ensure the bobbin case is correctly positioned.

If you are still having issues and your top thread is working fine, it’s time to get a free estimate of the repair cost for your sewing machine.

Needle Breakage

If you frequently experience needle breakage while sewing, it is a clear sign that your sewing machine needs attention.

Needle breakage can be caused by various factors, such as using the wrong needle type or size for the fabric, a bent or damaged needle, or a timing issue between the needle and the machine’s mechanisms.

To prevent needle breakage, make sure to use the appropriate needle for your project, regularly do needle replacements, and keep the machine well-maintained.

If you are confident it’s not a simple need to replace a needle or use a different needle for your project, go ahead and call a service center and have them take a look at your sewing machine problem.

Irregular Stitching or Skipped Stitches:

Inconsistent or skipped stitches can ruin the look of your finished project and indicate an underlying problem with your sewing machine. This issue may arise due to incorrect thread tension, a blunt or misaligned needle, or a malfunctioning feed dog mechanism.

I have covered all the reasons your machine may be doing skipped stitches here. Adjusting the tension, replacing the needle, or cleaning the feed dog can often resolve these problems, but if the issue persists, it is advisable to have a sewing machine tune-up.

Unusual Noises or Vibrations:

When your sewing machine starts making strange noises or excessive vibrations, it is a clear indication that something is amiss. Unusual noises can be caused by loose screws or parts, worn-out gears, or an issue with the machine’s motor.

Vibrations may result from a misaligned or unbalanced machine. If you notice these symptoms, it is crucial to have your sewing machine inspected for mechanical issues and repaired by a professional to prevent further damage.

Jammed or Stuck Handwheel:

The handwheel of your sewing machine should move smoothly and effortlessly. If you encounter resistance or the handwheel becomes completely stuck, it is a sign of a problem that requires immediate attention.

A jammed or stuck handwheel can occur due to bobbin thread entanglement in the bobbin area, debris accumulation, or a malfunctioning internal mechanism.

I don’t recommend trying to force the handwheel as it may cause severe damage, so it is best to consult a professional to resolve this issue.

Uneven Feed Dogs:

The feed dogs on a sewing machine are responsible for moving the fabric smoothly under the needle during stitching. If the feed dogs are not functioning properly, you may experience uneven feeding, fabric slippage, or improper stitch formation on your needle plate.

Uneven feed dogs can be caused by accumulated dirt and lint, damaged feed dog teeth, or a misalignment in the feed dog mechanism.

Regular cleaning and maintenance can help prevent this issue, but if the problem persists, seek professional repair.

Electrical or Power Issues:

Modern sewing machines often feature electrical components that can occasionally encounter problems. Issues like power surges, faulty wiring, or a malfunctioning presser foot/foot pedal or power cord can disrupt the normal operation of your machine.

If you experience power fluctuations, sparks, or the machine suddenly stops working, it is crucial to have it examined by an authorized technician for sewing machine services who can diagnose and repair electrical issues safely.

No matter which brands of sewing machines you use, you will probably have a time that you have tried all the fixes, but you need some sewing machine repair. Don’t ignore problems because it can result in a broken sewing machine that will then result in you needing a new machine.

We always recommend checking a sewing machine store or fabric store for recommendations for repair work. You can also ask in your local Facebook group who they recommend for a good sewing machine technician.
