I asked our team what is the most common quilt size they make for friends and family, and it’s no surprise Queen size.

That is why we want to give you the queen size quilt dimensions so if you are making a perfect quilt size you have the right size also.

Our Quilt size chart is always handy to use as it gives you the quilt sizes and how much batting you will need for your project.

You do want to take into account your mattress sizes because depending on the manufacturer the sizes may vary.

Our team makes a ton of quilts in a year and we forget what size we need for each one and sometimes patterns are wrong.

We sat down and created a quilt size chart that is a handy resource that covers different sizes of beds. From a standard mattress size, lap quilt, to twin quilts, queen quilt and even a larger quilt.

Keep in mind that beds have a lot of different measurements based upon toppers, material it’s made of etc. Sometimes we take the chart, measure the bed including the length of the sides of the bed to the floor and then design the quilt.

As you can see on our handy quilt size chart, a typical queen size quilt should measures around 81″ x 86″. You do want to take into account your mattress meaning do you have a pillow top or is it a memory foam?

We use our handy chart all the time because of the common sizes but we have had at times needed to change it due to different quilt sizes for a specific bed.

Calculating Overhang and Drape

To calculate the ideal overhang and drape, measure the height of your bed frame and how much you’d like the quilt to hang over the sides of the bed.

A nice drape might be about 10-12 inches of overhang on the sides and bottom of your bed. Consider an additional 10 inches if you prefer a pillow tuck. Here’s a quick guide on how to add extra inches:

  • Add 20-30 inches to the width of the mattress for overhang plus a pillow tuck
  • Add 10-15 inches to the length for overhang at the bottom
  • Leave extra space for a bed skirt if one is used to hide the bed frame

These are standard sizes for a queen quilt but as we have all learned the hard way especially when making one as a gift, if possible measure their bed especially the side of the bed from the mattress top to the floor.

You can also ask them the manufacturer for their queen mattress and check online what the size of the mattress is and than see how that measures to our standard quilt sizes on the chart.

Before you cut your final pieces, make sure and ask about binding  and length measurements so that you aren’t short in the final size especially on the sides of the mattress.

If a quilt for a bed feels overwhelming, there are several easy projects to start with. Here are a few of our favorite things to quilt.

If you are new to quilting, quilting is simply using smaller pieces of fabric and sewing them together to make a pattern or project. You simply need a sewing machine to begin.

Quilt Batting Chart

quilt batting sizes are a little more straightforward, but you will want to make sure the sizes on our chart match the size of your quilt cover.

If you adjusted the size of quilt, you will want to change the batting size especially for pre-cut batting packages.

Remember, these are just general guidelines and is an easy way to get started in finding the best fit.
